Challenges

Urban visualizations

There is a big plan to revitalize huge brown field in Prague. This area also includes new opera house by B.I.G. Group. However, there is still a fiery debate about it. For this purpose, the plans needed to be communicated in a new way. Since I have knowledge in Mixed Reality field, we started collaboration.

Secondary use-cases

I wanted to utilize my solution in more fields. As my university wanted to incorporate new technologies into education, I got an idea to connect my solution with local Architecture program.

Research

Urbanists

To acquire proper urbanistic background, I chose strategy of in-depth interviews and table research. I learned about parties involved in the process and all issues that need to be resolved before the building starts (assessments of noise, traffic, …).

Architects

To fit the solution into the university’s Architecture program, I arranged a Focus Group in the field with the students. To showcase possibilities of Mixed Reality, I presented HoloLens 2. They tried this headset and provided feedback of possible utilization of this device in their profession.

Industrial Designers

During my research, I found out that Industrial Design program is also interested in Mixed Reality possibilities. So, I arranged Focus Group again and students also provided insights. After the university research I realized that there is a lot more programs, that could use help Mixed Reality (e.g. Interior design, Product Design, Fashion Design or Sculpture)

Technology Assessment

The best Mixed Reality device at that time was Microsoft HoloLens 2, so I mapped the pros and cons. The most impressive features were hand manipulation and eye selection. The most problematic ones were field of view, color representation and hand-perception of UI. To evaluate graphic possibilities, I created colors scales to observe in the headset.

Research Outcomes

Research Insight

The research showed that all the specializations have similar goals. In very general interpretation, the urbanism deals with relation of buildings and people. The architecture deals with single building and person. And the Industrial design deals with product and person. The only distinction is the level of detail they seek.

Research Summary

According to the respondents, Mixed Reality is a great helper in design and subsequent presentation, that is even better than VR, because of the ability to see the surroundings. After the field studies, I performed Card Sorting to determine solutions, that would benefit all target audiences. I present them below.

High-Fidelity Design

Information Architecture

To incorporate proposed features, I had to design simple system to present them to the user. With all the features, I decided to split the UI relatively to use cases – to several modes (zoom levels). Each mode would be environment with “god-like” possibilities in it. The app would also support real-time collaboration powered by Microsoft Azure.

UI Design

To explore layouts, I drew sketches and storyboards. In this stage, I leveraged natural experiences according to Jakob’s Law. Mixed Reality builds on principles of reality, so I decided to follow that way. I also wanted the initial experience to be very clean. So, I decided for the core interface as blank work bench with materials around.

Interactions

I also used Jakob’s Law for natural interaction models, mostly hand grabbing and transformation, for their manipulation familiarity. For use-cases without real counterparts I used adapted 2D menus or buttons. I also designed experimental menus such as collocated 3D widgets (slider for time travel) or contextual hover menus bounded to 3D models.

For hover effects I used 10% black overlay and finger snapping (for buttons) or upscaling (for 3D models). For pressed effects I used 20% black overlay and diving in (for buttons) or downscaling (for 3D models).

Visual Design

I designed the table as blueprint table to mimic engineering process – the blue color doesn’t have any semantic usage and is very accessible, so I used it for action elements. For the rest of the app, I decided to go for colors from greyscale, to avoid friction with colorful 3D models. For backgrounds I used translucency to provide awareness of surroundings.

To enable creativity, I used playful fonts, icon sets & corner radiuses. To support emotional design, I applied subtle animations of surrounding (birds or cars). I built the scene using Spline app and build interactive 3D prototype.

Scope Definition

To meet the deadline, I had to develop only the features, that can showcase the most of benefits. I decided to present rapid prototyping in Edit Mode and implement environment building with hand interactions.

Learning Path

I started to learn C# development in Unity and Visual Studio. I used tutorials from Microsoft. Then, I replicated others’ projects, disintegrated them, and then rebuilt in custom way. I also consulted specific issues with Unity and VR professionals.

Development Process

I started with machine configurations to support XR development. Then I installed C# framework by Microsoft (MRTK 2) to accelerate coding. For systematic purposes I kept the layer panel clean, created color styles and backed up the projects after each update pack.

Scene Building

Firstly, I created the 3D UI with bench, shelves, and buttons. Secondly, I imported my 3D models (compressed) to Unity and built a digital twin of Prague district with buildings, roads, and nature. Then I animated public transport to add motion. Also, I put some 3D objects to the shelf (asset panel) for scene customization.

Interactions

I enabled hand manipulation of all objects in the scene – direct grabbing or distant selection with pointer (except buildings, that were already built in the district, their manipulation was locked). I also implemented dispenser of 3D models in asset panel. The models can be put to the city to customize it. They can be further transformed by stretching or rotating.

After several tests I implemented reset button with custom C# code that returns the scene into initial state. And for all the objects I enabled gravity. When the app was ready, I exported the Unity build into Visual Studio and deployed to the app to the headset.

Testing

Functional Testing

I continually tested the app using native Unity XR emulator. Software simulation of hand interactions turned out to be very bad using mouse and keyboard. Testing with proper hardware was more relevant. I performed several tests with every build update.

Outcomes

The app proved to be stable and functionable. Though the testing uncovered the headset restrictions. For example, it turned out to be very sensitive to the light conditions to use spatial awareness or bad in precise hand tracking.

The testing also pointed out to some of edge cases, for example need of floor, because 3D objects dropped out of the bench fell to the emptiness.

Usability Testing

I carried out basic usability testing with 5 design students. I gave them task was to build up an environment and I observed their actions using web streaming. More complex tests were planned after greenlighting the project by Prague urban center.

Outcomes

All respondents performed well. In general, they experienced the app more like a game and were immersed by the whole Mixed Reality experience and hand manipulation. On the other hand, people who wanted to build custom scene didn’t were frustrated by gravity. Since these people use mostly objects from asset panel, I changed their positioning to absolute.

Response of Prague Urban Centre

I showcased digital twin of a Prague district, that can be used as 3D building kit to digitally adjust a district layout. Or an interactive game for the public, that presents the district proposals. With bright future ahead, my app is on its way to be successfully greenlighted by the official Prague Urban Centre.

Response of University

During development process, I received collaboration requests from some studio leaders form Architecture and Industrial design. Then, the university created special XR lab, that allows students to use headsets to help them design better. And after all, my diploma defence ended up with success and I got rank of Master (of Arts).

Lessons Learned

The HoloLens turned out to be very hard device to build for. I underestimated its experimental nature and spent weeks by troubleshooting computer setup, interaction bugs, and deployments errors. The next time I will either shrink the scope or prolong the deadline.

Achievements

Thanks to this project, I enhanced my Spatial Design skills, learned to develop XR applications and deal with representatives of capital city. Moreover, this was the most interesting technology I have ever worked with. I am going to continue in spatial design because it enables endless possibilities for creativity. I perceive Mixed Reality as inevitable part of the future, and I would like to be a part of this revolution in technology.

Business Delivery

Now I focus on getting the project greenlighted. It requires building the app to headsets with better performance, color representation and field of view. This can be done by porting to the newest Meta Quest devices.

Environment Simulations

The user should be able to change set properties of the scene. For example, show the scene in the following years (trees would eventually grow larger), see the scene in winter or at night (to see if the public lights would cover the area properly) or simulate shading (by dragging sun and clouds to the preferred position).
